- on. "I can give you a key to the ruins and some
- information about the artifact you are to retrieve --
- it is called the Stone of Night. This artifact is
- worth something to the one who sent me, for historical
- reasons. It has played a large role in our worlds'
- past. I will pay you with a gem worth at least 100
- gold if you can bring the Stone of Night to me. I will
- wait here in the inn for your return. I will also give

- As you approach the still form of the stranger, you see that
- she is indeed badly hurt. Tavish has done her best to tie
- up and cover wounds and apply poultices, but it clearly won't
- be enough. Many of the townsfolk sit in vigil for the one who
- protected them from harm. Strangely, it seems when you look directly at the
- woman, her image seems vavy, as though through mist or water,
- and it almost seems as though you see a different face
- through the mist than the one she wears. As you approach,
- you feel a tightness in your stomache and your head begins
- to throb. You feel drawn to her and you watch as you lay
- your hands upon her. The tightness in your stomach releases

- Gharry lowers his voice to a whisper and looks clandestinely
- at the woman to be sure she cannot overhear. "She came in
- a couple of days ago, asking questions about the people of

- self-rightousness. "Of course, I'm not one to listen
- to rumor, but I have heard a story or two in my time."
- Then he relaxes and smiles a bit.

- He looks around at his dying crops and thin sheep and sighs.

- says the markets up north are bad this year, so I can't expect
- much income. Which means I can't afford to hire anyone."

- taking away young men and women. No one can afford anything.
- But even worse for the market is everyone's perception."

- gives you the wry half-smile which is all she has seemed
- capable of since you've known her. Her eyes have always
- conveyed a sense of knowledge one would be better off without.

- She blinks, momentarily taken aback. She seems unsettled and
- uncomfortable, but says "Yes. Before I came to Whitewater, I was
- a physician for the Legions. They are, in fact, what I was trying
- to leave behind when I came here." She seems almost in pain as
- her mind cannot help but bring back old memories. "I think maybe
- it has been long enough now that I can talk about it again. And
- I think the lessons I learned are lessons best learned second-hand."

- She bids you to sit and begins telling you of her past. "The
- Legions of Light are a military cult. I'm not
- familiar with thier origins... perhaps they once had a good
- purpose. But now there purpose is singular... they hunt and
- destroy magic. They consider magic to be inherently evil and
- seek to end its prescense in this world. Now, hating magic is
- actually part of my upbringing, though I question the wisdom of
- that along with everything else these days. I joined the Legions
- when I was young, full of self-rightousness and confident that
- I would make the world a better place by helping to rid it of
- magic. Regardless, it is
- the steps that the Legions take to insure the end of magic which I fled
- from. They find rumors, torture to get people to name their
- friends wizard and sorceress, and I will never forget the screams
- when the Troop I was in boarded a whole village into their Inn and
- burned it to the ground. Though the screams ended quickly, I still
- feel I can smell the burning bodies... and the look in the eyes of
- my fellow 'do-gooders' as they watched the Inn burn." She pauses
- a moment, lost in the past, then shakes her head to try and clear
- it. "What they do is wrong, whatever the end result might be. I
- could not live with what I was doing and what I had done, and so
- I fled. Here. Far enough that I hope the Legion shall never find
- me, for they consider leaving the Legion a sign of your corruption
- by magic." She looks you clearly in the eye. "There are two
- important lessons I learned from my experience. The first was to
- decide for myself what is right and wrong. And the second... well,
- never forget that
- your actions unto others will also affect you."

- A middle-aged man with thinning hair sits before you, garbed in
- an elegant black robe inscribed with mystic insignia. His
- concentration on the book before him is so deep that he does not
- notice your presense until you stand over him. Startled, he
- casts a quick glance over his shoulder at the kitchen. But
- whatever it is he expects to see he does not find, and he turns
- back to you glaring. "Its about time you got here. Whats it
- been... oh, two-hundred years! Did you expect me to live
- forever?!"

- BRACCUSSORRY "Umm... sorry about that."
- BRACCUSNOTSORRY "Who the hell are you?"

- NODE BRACCUSSORRY
- "Well, you should be." His ire fades a bit, but you can see that
- this is a man who is quick and often to temper. "My name is
- Braccus. I know, I know...
- you have tons of questions," he says with understanding. Then
- his heavry brows knit together in anger. "Well, I'm a busy man.
- Here's what you need to know: You're trapped. This so called
- library", he says with scorn, "has had cast upon it the biggest Spell
- of Preservation every cast. We, the Child Prophets, cast the
- spell in order to preserve the information you need and to protect
- the Stone of Night while awaiting YOUR return." His accusatory
- tone leaves you startled and confused. "Due to a series of
- unfortunate accidents, all of the other members of our precious
- sect have died... but thanks to the ingenious Spell of Preservation,
- they did not pass on. Their bodies are still walking around,
- defending the Stone. Another magical spell, cast before the Spell
- of Preservation, hides the exit from this hell-hole. So, in order
- for you to leave, you're going to have to go down into the tombs,
- retrieve the Stone, and bring it me. I can use the Stone to end
- the Spell and we can get the hell out of here! Any questions?"
- You can tell from his tone that there had better not be. Almost
- without pause he adds, "The door to the tombs is in the kitchen.
- I threw the key into the children's playroom after I last locked
- up my undead brethren." He dismisses you with a curt return to
- his books.

- The man's eyes practically pop out of his skull. His cheeks
- and the balding part of his head flush a bright red and he practically
- quivers with rage. "You think you can do this without me, you
- Spawn of the Void?! When you're ready to show the proper respect
- to your elders, you come crawling back to me. Believe me, you'll
- never leave this place without my help and I guaran-damn-tee you
- that after waiting two-hundred years I can wait for your apology."
- He abruptly turns his back to you and marches off.

- His burning anger seems to have calmed to a smoldering fire.

- His eyes take on a frightening new degree of lunacy. "Maybe

- He starts mumbling in some ancient, mystic tongue, clearly
- intending to do you harm.

- His gaze sharpens and the very air seems to become still.
- "Well then, we can get gone. Give me the Stone so that I
- can break the Spell and get us out."

- When you hand over the Stone, the light eminating from within
- it goes out. Braccus begins waving his free hand over the
- stone and chanting mystically. You feel tugs of power and
- see movement in the corner of your eye as some spell is cast.
- The Stone begins to glow again, but this time with a penetrating
- darkness rather than light. Braccus stops chanting as the
- darkness of the Stone grows, beginning to envolop him. He looks
- up at you and his wry grin never reaches the angry look in his
- eyes. "At long last the Stone is mine. As thanks, I shall not
- kill you, but let you rot as I did in this pit for all eternity."
- With that the darkness of the stone swallows him up, then with
- a dark flash, both he and the Stone are gone.

- This dessicated corpse of a woman ambles toward you with
- less mal-intent than the rest. Though you find her molding
- corpse repulsive and her twitching movements alarming, she
- appears to be trying to gesture soothingly. As she approaches,
- the smell of rot becomes overwhelming. Though her
- eye sockets are empty, she peers at you intently, and though her
- teeth and tongue are gone, she speaks will a clear and hauntingly
- beautiful voice. "Greetings, $PLAYER." Her attempt at a smile
- turns your stomache. "I have been expecting you for a long time.
- I was and am Dianna, sometimes called the Child Prophet. I
- have seen your face for many years now and have known that we
- would meet. Sadly, though I was never a beauty, I believe my
- looks have declined greatly in recent years. Strangely, perhaps
- as some sort of cosmic balance, I find that instead of the
- usual babbling dribble in which I prophecise, I can speak more
- clearly."

- baritone, "... you think you can finally defeat me, eh?" It
- laughs maniacally and deeply. "You will never have the Stone,
- Braccus."

- "Oh, how very clever" it says mockingly. "You're not Braccus."
- The ghoulish figure starts prancing around, shaking its hips,
- with little pieces of meat falling out of the robe. "And I'm
- Prophet Dianna" it says in falsetto. "The world is doomed without
- the Lost Child and we must prepare for his return. La la la la
- la." He whips back around, fire dancing between his fingers.
- "You'll not have the Stone, Braccus!"
